If you are injured in a transport accident, you should make a TAC claim to receive medical and financial support.

You can make a claim by using the TAC's online lodgement form, or by calling the TAC on 1300 654 329 (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5:00pm).

Assistance from the TAC is available even if the accident was your fault or no one is to blame for the accident.

For example, Ann successfully lodged a claim for a Colac woman who was run over when her dog bumped the handbrake of her car. The woman was awarded more than $140,000 in compensation due to the permanent injuries she received, as well as assistance with medical expenses and income entitlements.

Support can include:

• medical treatment, including ambulance transport and x-rays
• services to help you while you recover, such as physiotherapy and counselling
• replacement or repair of damaged glasses or dentures
• income support if you can’t work because of your accident injuries
• return to work support for you and your employer
• medication by prescription or recommended by your doctor
• hire or purchase of items such as crutches or wound dressings
• travel and accommodation to appointments related to your injuries
• a lump sum payment if you are eligible for compensation

You have 12 months to lodge a TAC claim from either the date of your accident, or from the date an injury from your accident first becomes evident.

The TAC may consider a claim made within three years of your accident if there are reasonable grounds for the delay.
